Systems Concepts
As writer and researcher Justin Zhuang notes: “The frames Singaporeans use to look at their home are changing” (Picturing Home). Putting aside arguements on what constitutes as heritage and is fit for conservation, I found myself asking what happens when citizens lose a public space that holds significance to them. What takes its place besides a new residential or mall?
If the physical space has changed, I wondered what becomes of the social memories that were created there. In addition, how can a Designer/artist play a role in compiling a catalogue of accessible spatial memory?
As our manicuring of the City State continues due to space constraints, (similar to Tokyo) “proceeding unevenly and leaving pockets of older streets and building stock behind” (Sand 55), the process of discovery and reinvention of ‘home’ and ‘city’ for locals will have to become either more intentional or perhaps be aided by design systems in combination with ‘intermedia’ solutions. Systems Concepts is a compilation of research findings based on this inquiry.

Design:
The design of this research compendium uses blue and beige-orange on a cool grey base to convey systems (cold) coexisting with humans (warm). Layout grids and baseline grid are adhered to strictly. The typefaces chosen are modernist or borderline futurist once again to gel with the image of systems.
Specifications:
Size: A5 closed, A4 open
Binding: Staple Bind
Paper: Maple Bright
